HoCo fun

Homecoming 2023 is officially in the books for the Sandhills Valley Mavericks.

The theme of the week was Breaking the Broncos as the Mavericks hosted Mullen in all athletic contests this week.

During the school week both Stapleton and Tryon took part in school-wide festivities. McPherson County Schools was impressively decorated in an awesome Monopoly theme prominently displayed throughout their school.

Stapleton Elementary students produced outstanding posters with unique themes relating to homecoming festivities.

Both schools conducted Pep Rallies on Thursday before the big volleyball and football contests versus Mullen.

At Stapleton - Mrs. Stewart and the student council planned a fun filled afternoon with a beach ball volleyball game, Mrs. Layher getting to put on pads and tackle her son and lone senior football player (Cooper), and fathers of our senior volleyball players (Peyton, Tessa, Elizabeth, Natalie) getting the chance to hit a spike against their daughters. All of this was judged by the statistician extraordinaire Trinity Cassell and her father. The highlight for the elementary students was definitely getting to pie the band teacher, Mr. Regier, in the face!

All of the fall sports team members and coaches were introduced before being released to go to play in the games.

Once the football and volleyball players left, the Stapleton Student Council and Secondary Teachers oversaw  a variety of "minute to win it" games for the remaining students.

While the athletic contests themselves turned out  in Mullen's favor (Volleyball losing in 4 sets) (Football defeated 40-18) the games were well attended by all schools.

After the completion of the games crowns were awarded to King Braden Powell and Queen Tara Phelps from Tryon along with Senior Attendants - Kaden Blake and Katherine Anderson.

For Stapleton those elected were King Cooper Layher and Queen Marianne Zuniga. Prince and Princess were Ethan Weems and Peyton Moore. Runner up was awarded to Elizabeth Fetty. The crown bearers were Leah Joedeman and Cole Higgins.

Since the games were held Thursday night the dance was moved to Friday evening in Tryon. Students from both schools came together decked out in their best and most creative outfits.

Special thanks to all the staff, students, and community members from both schools for making this homecoming week an enjoyable and memorable experience for all. GO MAVERICKS!
